Her wish was for these funds to be used for undergraduate students. John Masnovi (Chemistry) Jerry Mundell Eulogies usually are delivered in a tone of bereavement for those who have passed on. For someone such as John Masnovi the eulogy should recognize and celebrate a life well spent. Yes, John should have lived much, much longer, and yes, he will be missed, but as I reflect on what he accomplished during his life I feel gratitude for having known him. Just three weeks before receiving the news of Johns passing, my wife Anne and I, along with Dr. David Anderson and his wife Cindy were invited to see the beautiful house that John and his wife Julia had spent years designing and building. Johns enjoyment of gardening was readily apparent by the numerous trees and vegetation he had planted in the backyard. Looking back, we were grateful to have spent one final summer afternoon enjoying some food and conversation with John. In regards to Johns family life both he and Julia raised three wonderful daughters, Monica, Melissa, and Michelle, two of them now are medical doctors, and the third is about to become a lawyer. I recall, years ago, after teaching an evening class I would stop by Johns office and sit by his desk as he talked to one of his daughters on the phone helping her with her homework. His voice was always soft and loving, telling her goodnight when they finished. John was a gentle, unassuming person. He never boasted, bragged, or put himself above anyone. I recall, years ago, sitting in his living room with Anne. Seeing the grand piano I asked who played. Without saying a word, John sat down at the piano and started playing a classical piece. I had no idea that he was an accomplished musician. In fact, Julia informed years later that as a high school student, John placed second in a city-wide music competition. Unlike some people, he never mentioned or bragged about this accomplishment. John was also a dedicated teacher, who held high standards for both himself and his students. He was known as a good teacher but a hard tester, much to the chagrin of his students. But John knew he had the responsibility of properly educating his students, and that learning isnt always a fun undertaking, a point students today dont always appreciate. I once attended one of Johns lectures and found his presentation of a topic changed the way I taught that topic for years to come. In regards to Dr. Masnovis academic background, John was a dedicated faculty member in the Department of Chemistry at Cleveland State for 33 years. He received both his Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry (1975) and Masters degree in Organic Chemistry (1977) from Notre Dame University and then his Ph.D. degree in Organic Chemistry (1982) from the University of Chicago. From there he did a post-doctoral fellowship from 1982 1985 in the research group of Professor J.K. Kochi at Indiana University and then at the University of Houston. Dr. Masnovi began his faculty position in 1985 at 㽶ֱ teaching courses in organic chemistry at both the undergraduate and graduate level, being promoted to Associate Professor in 1990 and Professor in 1996. He was an active and productive scholar publishing over 80 peer-reviewed articles in prominent journals in the field of electron transfer, organic, bio-organic and organometalic chemistry. Dr. Masnovi collaborated extensively with NASA Glenn/Lewis Research Center, receiving $1.7 million in funding, collaborating with Dr. Harry Andrist of Cleveland State and Dr. Aloysius Hepp at NASA (and recently Nanotech Innovations), with the Department of Chemistry at Youngstown State University, collaborating with Dr. Steven Schildcrout, and with colleagues within and outside the Department of Chemistry at Cleveland State. Numerous graduate students received their doctorate degree under his mentoring. But some of my best memories of John were the times he and I would meet in the hallway during a busy day and spend more time then we should have talking and laughing at each others jokes. John had a wonderful sense of humor and enjoyed laughing as much as anyone. I hope that within this short time I have properly spoken to those parts of John Masnovis life that made him such a positive influence on family, friends, and students. At the beginning of my talk I mentioned Johns eulogy to be considered a celebration of sorts and in keeping with Johns humble nature I am sure he would want it to be a quiet celebration. Approval of Meeting Minutes Summary of September 12, 2018 Approved IV. Report of the Faculty Senate President William Bowen Senate offices dedicated meeting room remodel All other meetings at Moot court LB 101 for the remainder of the year Socials at the University House / Sands hosting. Social events opportunity to get to know each other and have two-way communication Ad hoc committee on Presidential priorities and steering met with President Sands to hear vision and priorities all hopeful signs. Meanwhile, just a brief comment about those conversations. I find them to be genuinely hopeful signs. And they are important. If my 20+ years of experience with the Faculty Senate has taught me nothing else, it has become crystal clear that administrators are almost never as much in charge as they are portrayed to be by faculty members, and faculty members are almost never as submissive and powerless as one might imagine. Influence and pressure flow both ways. The relationship between the faculty and the administration is a two-way or probably more accurately a multi-way -- relationship. This is more than a little part of the reason I find those conversations, and more generally the active participation of both administrators and faculty members in our shared governance to be so important. Transcription of minutes university archivist minutes are for summaries of the actions have the audio recording if needed please clarify if necessary Renovations of MC include faculty early Ben Baran will be involved as chair of the academic space committee Investiture Friday celebration hope to see you there V. Admissions and Standards Committee Karla Hamlen Mansour C Minus Grades Policy (Report No. 13, 2018-2019) Rational 㽶ֱ does not have C- - currently transfer students have to retake consistent with other OH universities Elkins how many are affected by this? E.g., Occupational Therapy will not accept C- to graduate program (even if UG does accept). Meiksins this is for UG to UG not grad. History of not having C- = it allows a better balance since dont have A+ May need to revisit Kalafatis not a significant difference C vs. C- All in favor VI. Report of the Provost and Chief Academic Officer Jianping Zhu Reminders Book orders due soon for Spring 2019 State law to make it available when they register to be able to consider costs and buy earlier Consider open access materials Midterm grades were doing well over 90% compliance for 100 and 200 level courses = important feedback dropped to 79% - Help us help our students Library hours - committed to student success students will be finding out how many will use and commit to using after 9:00 PM IX. Report of the Student Government Association Samia Shaheen (Report No. 14, 2018-2019) Thank you for reception with Senate great to meet everyone there and talk Engagement voter registration civic responsibility Working with sustainability director Textbook affordability - $1100 spent on average per year explore ways to help share? Used? Different edition? open access books big publishers are expensive the answers to exams are on line Excited about the Investiture X. Open Question Time Provost to add to Samia open access some subjects $400 for a book many faculty are using open access have saved over time of $250,000 by going to open access other options, older versions, etc. Inclusive access is another option working with publishers for discounts if the entire class commits to buy the book for multiple sections and put it toward the students fees instead of out of pocket easier to use financial aid. Samia not only saving money but helps preserve academic integrity since answers are online Krebs new textbook policy makes sense faculty affairs review if a faculty is using their own published book = Provost = only if they are getting royalties Dixit any needs based grants for those that are more expensive Yes per Glenda Thornton for largest classes the library does put them on the shelf SGA did a fundraising drive for the library textbook center Moo-Yeal Lee - Has done efforts to use open textbooks in engineering and instead of publishing one with a publisher, is considering writing it as an open textbook.
